The Ferret to hold John Peel tribute show ‘Hardcore Halloween’ this weekend

The Ferret is this weekend holding a tribute show to the late Radio 1 DJ John Peel.

On Saturday 30 October, the Hardcore Halloween event will feature hardcore, grindcore and crust punk, with a drum and bass aftershow.

It will feature live sets from The Stupids, Hellbastard, Deviated Instinct, and Lancaster act The Crippens (formerly Dr and The Crippens), who were all part of the late 80s grindcore scene that Peelie popularised with his boundless enthusiasm.

Stupids – Art of the State

Most years, local promoter Tuff Life Boogie puts together a special show to celebrate the legacy of John Peel. The events are called Un-Peeled and feature acts that John championed on-air and invited to record Peel sessions.

The Stupids, Deviated Instinct and Dr and The Crippens recorded seven Peel sessions between them.

Klute

Hellbastard did not record a session because they allegedly could not afford to hire a van to get to the BBC studios in Maida Vale from the North East.

Hardcore Halloween

They were a favourite of Peel’s, who commented on-air that if his children were naughty, he would scare them by saying he would invite Hellbastard round for tea.

After the gig ends at 11.30, the drum and bass aftershow takes over from midnight until 4am, featuring a DJ set from Tommy, The Stupids’ drummer and vocalist using his alter ego, Klute.

The last record that John Peel played on his final show was a Klute track, Time 4 Change. Local drum and bass DJs Neil D and Tyramyx are warming up for Klute.

Deviated Instinct

Tickets for both events can be picked up locally from Action Records on Church Street, behind the bar at The Ferret or online via Skiddle.
