Preston veteran ‘still smiling’ after scaling Snowdon for Armed Forces charity
A former Royal Green Jacket from Preston has climbed Snowdon to raise funds for charity.
Vince Stopp served in the military for 24 years and took on the challenge on Monday 20 September, for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. He undertook the climb despite having two knee replacements on the same leg.
Vince has beaten his target of £500 and said it was a struggle recovering from his operations, but the goal of climbing Snowdon and wanting to help SSAFA was his inspiration.
‘Heroic’ Ingol boy praised after helping unconscious man on Tag Lane
A 12-year-old Ingol boy has received praise after coming to the aid of an unconscious man on Tag Lane.
Ben Hillidge, who plays for Fulwood Amateurs Under 13s football club, discovered the man around 8.30pm on Wednesday 8 September when walking home with his cousin and a friend.
Thinking on his feet, Ben called out to passers-by for help, and they rang for an ambulance. When it arrived, the emergency services treated the man, administering first aid.
Longton schoolgirl to join Rainbow Run fundraiser for Royal Preston Hospital
A seven-year-old Longton girl will take part in the Rainbow Run fundraiser next month.
Longton Primary School pupil Petra Sindall signed up for the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals event, which runs in October, to raise funds for the £1 million Children’s Appeal.
The funds raised will improve the children’s ward and paediatric outpatients department at Royal Preston Hospital.
Petra, who lives with mum Julie, dad Paul and big brother Lennon, 14, will walk and cycle for her Rainbow Run between Monday 18 to Sunday 24 October.
In Pictures: Banger rally raises over £30k for Derian House Children’s Hospice
Iconic cars from films, including Lightning McQueen from Cars and cars from Ghostbusters and Dumb and Dumber, were part of a banger rally which raised over £30,000 for Derian House Children’s Hospice.
The Great Big North West Tour 2021 raised vital funds for the charity and was organised by Preston-based house builder Kingswood Homes.
The 14 cars, which also included an American police car, a drag queen car, a car signed by Liverpool FC players and a homage to Grease, set off from Derian House hospice in Chorley on Friday 23 September.
Preston Sikh Sewa Society UK to restart Langar Sewa feeds to help those in need across Preston
Preston Sikh Sewa Society UK, a group of volunteers from various backgrounds, are set to restart the weekly Langar Sewa feeds each Saturday evening at 7pm at the Market Street canopy.
The event was paused to keep volunteers safe during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The events will begin Saturday 2 October.
The free kitchen has been running since 2017 to help serve vegetarian meals to the most vulnerable. These were rules laid down by the Sikh’s first Guru Ji, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the 15th century.
