The Mill café in Lostock Hall is owned and run by St Catherine’s Hospice, with proceeds used to help fund the specialist care provided to local people affected by life-shortening illnesses.

The Mill was extended early last year to accommodate more customers and host special events, and more volunteer café assistants are now required to lend a hand for two to four hours a week.
Elaine Williams has recently reduced her hours working on the chemotherapy unit at Chorley hospital. She started volunteering at The Mill a couple of months ago and is really enjoying the experience.
She said: “I love the camaraderie and the fact that everybody is so appreciative of what you’re doing. It’s a really nice place to be.
“You do feel like you’re doing some good because it’s for a charity, but I get an awful lot from it myself too. I’m making new friends and I feel very much part of the team, it gets me out of the house and I’m doing some good for other people.”
