Homelessness charity Emmaus Preston is using Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) to celebrate their dedicated volunteers, but also to appeal for new people to get involved with the charity.
Volunteers’ Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. Volunteers benefit charities and groups across the country, but volunteering has been shown to improve volunteers’ wellbeing too.
Emmaus Preston provides a home, work and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion.

Emmaus operates three large charity stores in the city with all the money raised used to help people out of homelessness.
Local volunteers work alongside Emmaus Preston’s companions, formerly homeless people who are now supported by the charity.
Kath Derbyshire, trustee and volunteer at Emmaus Preston, said: “As well as being part of the board of trustees I also get stuck in and volunteer alongside companions in the shops. It is so satisfying to be part of the charity.
“I love seeing the change in companions as they settle in, working and having that belief and confidence building. The biggest reward of all is seeing companions moving on if they choose and usually with qualifications under their belt.”
Emmaus Preston is currently looking for charity shop volunteers and van drivers. The charity also has roles covering social media, fundraising, DIY and gardening at their community building.
Stephen Buchanan, Director at Emmaus Preston, said: “Volunteers’ Week is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to all of the people who give their time and skills as Emmaus Preston volunteers or trustees.
“We’re always looking for people with energy and expertise to lend a hand and be a part of our Preston community. There are a variety of volunteer roles we’re looking to fill so if you or someone you know would like to get involved, please visit our website for more details.”
