In the week that indoor hospitality opened across Preston, we’ve had lots of news to bring to you.

From the NHS vaccination scheme continuing to gather speed, to people managing to avoid the Great British weather by sitting indoors to dine with up to six people, it’s been a hopeful week.

Here are five stories you may have missed.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity launch first ever Children’s Appeal to benefit Royal Preston Hospital

Thousands of children could soon be benefitting from a ÂŁ1 million overhaul of wards and other treatment areas at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity has launched its first ever Children’s Appeal.

Its target £1m will be spent on a shopping list of items which will reinvent children’s out-parents and in-patients which together treat 10,000 young people annually aged from one day to 19 years.

Javed Iqbal formally welcomed as Preston’s 693rd Mayor

The city of Preston has formally welcomed Councillor Javed Iqbal as its 693rd Mayor and the first Muslim to hold the role.

His appointment as Mayor comes after Councillor David Borrow held the role for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Councillor Iqbal served as Deputy Mayor throughout 2020/21 and has now become the Mayor following the completion of Councillor Borrow’s term in office.

Preston-based beer lovers come together on online platform to share their passion for pints

The North West Beer Appreciation Society (NWBAS) is a group which was founded by Christopher Griffiths during the summer of 2020.

On 8 July, the Facebook group was started with just Chris and two of his friends so they could have a drink together online whilst the pubs were closed.

After ten months, the small group is now almost at 700 members, who are predominantly Preston-based craft beer enthusiasts.

Fishwick volunteer is offering free fitness, health and wellbeing advice

Hussain Master has been volunteering at Fishwick community sports centre for 20 years and has used lockdown to take a course in personal exercise, nutrition and health.

He is now using his knowledge to help those who want to improve their mental and physical health for free.

Hussain can guide, make nutrition and exercise plans and gym programmes and the only cost will be to access the gym and use the facilities, costing ÂŁ25 for a boxing and gym membership.

Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival is being held virtually for 2021

The Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival is set to raise the roof and get the whole city swinging in their living rooms until Saturday 5 June.

The festival will be available online to everyone, and every event is free of charge.

This year’s festival, which grew out of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), is supported by Arts Council England, Preston City Council, the University and the local community, which has made it possible to deliver celebrated talent for everyone to enjoy.
