A petition has been started by a concerned resident who fears for the safety of others after a teenage boy was hit by a van there on Wednesday (17 March).

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the incident, but Linzi Fairclough wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of the road.

She is concerned that the 30mph speed limit is not being adhered to on the road.

On her Change.org petition ‘Making Blackbull Lane safe for all especially the children!’ she wrote:

“Around 8pm last night, I took my dog on its evening walk to Blackbull Lane and found a police van diverting all traffic.

“What I witnessed was scary to say the least, the speed of a number of the cars made me worry that they would not have time to stop before noticing the police cordon.

“It transpired that the police were removing a badly damaged van, I and it was clear that the 30 mile speed limit was, in the main, not being adhered to.

“I then arrived home to find news that sadly a young boy had been hit and injured. I spoke to friends as it really upset me being a parent and I have friends whose children witnessed it – this must have been so traumatising.

“Now I cant think of anything else apart from worry about this boy, his friends and family – I am praying he makes a full recovery.

“I am a parent of a 10 year old who is due to start high school in September and only yesterday she ventured the walk to school, (alone for the first time), as a practice.

“To say I was worried was an understatement….luckily she will avoid this route but the worry it caused me was enough to know that if she was heading to this school I wouldn’t be able to rest on a daily basis.

“I am hoping to start a petition to have this looked at for another crossing or maybe speed bumps as I think this would be the best solution considering the speeds I witnessed last night.

“What I witnessed last night, along with the devastating news that has kept me awake, has made me feel the need to take some form of action.

“I live in this area and have done most of my life I drive past the academy daily and its clear its not safe for the children to cross and yesterday’s incident  has just confirmed my fears and it must change…

“This petition is on behalf of all residents – parents, brothers, sisters and friends in Fulwood.”
