Three cars and a lorry were involved in the smash on the southbound side between Junction 27 and Junction 26.

The lorry driver was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital and is understood to be in a serious but stable condition – according to an update from the North West Motorway Police.

He said: “We attended with Manchester Fire Service, Highways England North West, Merseyside Police and the North West Ambulance Service.

“I attended as part of hazmat group.

“No injuries from the car and the tanker driver airlifted to hospital for precautionary measures.”

The crash, shortly after 12noon on Saturday (23 January) saw both directions of the M6 shut by emergency services.

An up-and-over closure of Junction 27 remains in place with drivers taken off and then back on via the slip road.
