Snowstorms have left the M6 like an ice rink near Preston.

A multi-car crash has taken place where the M61 meets the M6 northbound.

Two lanes on the M6 are also closed further North between Junction 31 and Junction 31A.

Update: The M6 and M61 have fully reopened after the icy conditions chaos

An eyewitness told Blog Preston he believed ‘up to 20 cars’ were involved in the crash where the M61 joins the M6.

North West motorway police said: “For those doing essential journeys north this evening, there has been some snowfall in the area of Junction 30 on the M6, resulting in vehicles skidding.

“Carriageway appears to be at a standstill at the moment. Colleagues at Lancs Police and Highways England dealing.”

Police and Highways England have shut the M6 between Junction 30 and Junction 31 northbound while the collisions are dealt with.

There are delays of more than an hour between Junction 28 of the M6 at Leyland through to Junction 32 for Broughton.

It took place shortly before 4pm on Sunday (27 December).

Preston and Lancashire is currently covered by a Met Office warning for snow and ice showers.
