Preston coronavirus cases top 100 mark for second day running and return to ‘tier-three’ on the cards in December

Preston has seen a second successive day of more than 100 positive Covid-19 cases.

The city recorded 109 new coronavirus cases for Wednesday (11 November).

South Ribble in contrast had 38 new cases for the same day.

Blackburn with Darwen had the highest coronavirus cases with 163 new confirmed cases.

Preston and South Ribble had both seen falling coronavirus infection rates in the past week.

The city’s infection rate has begun to level off since late October but two days back above the 100-mark will likely see the infection rate begin to creep back up again.

Preston’s latest coronavirus infection rate is 436.0 cases per 100,000 people for the seven days to November 7, down from 456.9 per 100,000 for the seven days to October 30.

South Ribble’s infection rate has been rapidly falling away with cases more than halving across the borough.

The borough’s infection rate is now 255.4 per 100,000, down from 341.2 per 100,000 – for the same date ranges as Preston above.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show 159 coronavirus-related deaths registered up to 30 October in Preston.

In South Ribble there have been 103 coronavirus-related deaths.

Regional restrictions will return from 2 December

Pressure has been growing on the government to outline what happens from 2 December.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stressed the current national lockdown will end on that date, ‘no matter what’.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said: “When the current national measures come to an end on December 2 we will be returning to a regional tiered approach.”

Preston, and Lancashire, were classed as tier-three in the previous Covid Local Alert Level system – seeing non-food pubs and bars closing, tight rules on any household mixing and a number of other restrictions.

Proposals for the updated restrictions to come in from 2 December are due to be released the week before to give MPs time to vote on the plans.
