Changes have been made to the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone (DEPZ) around Springfields Fuels Limited in Salwick.

Lancashire County Council has recently revised the zone, which includes the villages of Lea Town and Clifton, to meet new regulations.

The DEPZ varies from approximately 300 metres to 1.4 km from the boundary of the Springfields site. It’s defined by roads, footpaths, field boundaries and waterways.

Although the risk has not changed from the site, Lancashire County Council has re-defined the overall geographical area of the zone, which has slightly increased.

The zone includes 599 premises including residential, businesses and also St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School.

Although there’s no change to the risk from the Site Operator, having this new responsibility meant Lancashire County Council could review the DEPZ and make it more manageable and sensible from an emergency planning point of view.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We have carefully considered the DEPZ in line with our new responsibilities.

“This review, which is one of a number we are responsible for and carry out routinely, means that we can be assured robust safety plans are in place.”

Under the regulations those in the DEPZ will get pre-distributed specific information on emergencies. Those included in the DEPZ have been contacted by Lancashire County Council.

A copy of the Site Operator’s Consequence Report, and the DEPZ Determination Report, which explains how the decision was reached, are available on the Lancashire County Council website.
