A mother and daughter from Hoghton have launched an artisan candle company from their kitchen.
AdvertisementCandle lovers Allison Fogarty and Samantha Cowell began by Nala after becoming concerned about the health and environmental impact of candles they bought to use at home.
Samantha said: “One evening, sitting in our family kitchen, we got talking about what really makes a good candle. From here we started to become more health conscious about the candles we were burning in our home.
“After a lot of research we were really surprised by how little we had known about the substances used in synthetic fragranced candles. We tried to find a natural candle that listed all of the ingredients and their impact on the environment, and we couldn’t find one.
“This is when we started experimenting in our kitchen with eco-friendly, sustainable and natural waxes and essential oils to create our own candles.
“We are really passionate about wellbeing and hand blend our essential oils to provide aromatherapy benefits to the mind and body, while also knowing they are safe to burn in the home.”
By Nala fragrances include Rejuvenate, which features pine, patchouli and clary sage, and Relax with ylang ylang, lavender and juniper berry. The candles come in reusable glass jars with sustainable natural cork lids.
Explaining the choice of company name, Samantha said: “Nala is actually my dog’s name. Our brand is aimed at being able to use our candles safely around the home for all the family, including pets – and I just love the name.”
