Blackpool Road will have partial closures this weekend to replace a footbridge near the River Wyre.

The A586 is set to be closed where it crosses the River Wyre at the village of St Michael’s on Wyre from 10pm on Friday 19 June until 6am on Sunday 21 June.

The footbridge which is due to be replaced provides access for pedestrians, as the historical road bridge carrying Blackpool Road over the River Wyre is too narrow for a footway.

The old steel bridge is due to be lifted out and replaced with a new aluminium one, with Blackpool Road needing to be closed in order to accommodate the crane being used to lift the bridge.

Diversions will be in place via A and B roads for all traffic including HGVs, however most people will be able to use much shorter routes to get around the closure using local roads.

Surveys have shown that the existing steel bridge is deteriorating, with the aluminium one expected to need less maintenance, minimising the potential for future costs and disruption. Once installed, the new St Michael’s Footbridge will qualify as the longest single span aluminium footbridge in the UK.

David Leung, group manager for design and construction, said: “The replacement of St Michael’s Footbridge is part of our wider annual programme of investment and maintenance of bridges and structures.

“We’ve scheduled this work for a weekend to minimise disruption as far as possible, and I’m grateful for people’s patience while we carry out this essential work.

“If you’re planning to travel in this area from late Friday to early on Sunday morning please plan your journey around the closure. There will be a signed diversion suitable for all vehicles including HGVs, however most people will be able to use alternative routes on local roads to avoid it.”

The diversion route in a clockwise direction is via the A586 (Blackpool Road) towards Catterall, A6 to Broughton, B5269 towards Singleton, A585 Fleetwood Road and A586 (Blackpool Road). Access will be maintained throughout on Blackpool Road for pedestrians and cyclists.

If the work cannot be completed this weekend, Lancashire County Council will look to close Blackpool Road at the same times over the following weekend.

Passengers using Stagecoach Service 42 on Saturday should check with the operator for changes to the service.
