A section of Ring Way through Preston city centre is being shut after part of the road collapsed.

Lancashire County Council put a lane closure in place from Thursday (May 28) after a ‘depression emerging in the road surface’.

The sinkhole is in Ring Way in the stretch between Lawson Street and North Road, heading away from the city centre.

The county council is closing Ring Way on the stretch between Lawson Street and North Road, outside the courts, for investigation work this weekend.

No date has been given for when Ring Way is to reopen as the county council say they need to understand the cause first and prepare a repair.

A diversion is being put in place from 6am on Saturday (May 30) via Lawson Street, Walker Street, Lancaster Road, Melling Street and then into North Road.

Traffic heading towards the city centre from the North Road junction down Ring Way will not be affected.

Area highways manager Rob Wilson said: “We’re sorry for any disruption due to the need to close Ring Way this weekend, however it’s vital that we investigate the cause of the road collapse.

“Unfortunately we can’t say when we’ll be able to reopen the road until we’ve found the cause of the problem, however we’ll be working throughout the weekend as necessary to try to get it repaired as quickly as possible.”
