The competition is taking place on Twitter, with voting open until 9pm.

The prize is a place in the final against Penkhull, a town in Stoke-on-Trent.

The Preston flag had a resounding victory in the quarter-final against Healthfield, winning 87.2 per cent of the vote.

Designer of the Preston flag Philip Tibbetts predicts the semi-final could go to the wire. He said: “Both flags have been getting similar tallies so I reckon it’ll be close.”

Inspired by a North End mug, the Preston flag uses a cross design to reference the city’s religious heritage and its position as a hub for transport.
