A centenarian from Fulwood had a surprise visit from Boris Johnson on VE Day.Advertisement
Speaking on a live video link, the prime minister thanked Ernie Horsfall, 102, for his efforts during World War Two.
Ernie took charge of tanks such as Crusaders and Matildas during the conflict.
When the war ended, Ernie told the prime minister he was in Naples.
“It was a big relief”, he said.

Boris thanked the veteran for what he and his generation did. He said: “If you hadn’t been there and hadn’t done what you did – not just Britain but the whole of Europe – we’d have faced a radically different future.”
Ernie replied: “We did it for the world.”
