Fancy trying something a bit different? If so, an upcoming activity day at UCLan could be for you.

The Something for Everyone taster day will provide opportunities to have a go at drumming, singing, dancing, Tai Chi, meditation and more, all for free. It’s open to newbies and experienced performers alike.

Taking place on Sunday 9 February, workshop leaders from groups such as the Worldwise Samba Drummers, the Preston People’s Choir and the Brigantii Border Morris Dancers will guide people in trying out a wide variety of activities.

The event starts at 10am with a musical jam led by Tim Saunders of Rhythm Jam. After this, sessions will run in parallel and participants can choose as follows:

  • 11am – Vocal improvisation or samba drumming
  • 12pm – A sacred ceremony, music improvisation or Morris dancing
  • 1.15pm – Meditation or Tai Chi
  • 2pm – Harmony singing or free improv
  • 3pm – Djembe drumming or Lindy Hop

The event will close with members of the Preston Scratch Band leading participants in singing and playing pop songs.

The event has been organized by Jon Aveyard of the UCLan Something for Everyone project, which supports many of the groups involved in the taster day.

Jon said: “This is a great opportunity to have a go at lots of really exciting and diverse activities, and it’s all for free.

“These short workshops are based on regular sessions that are open to the public, so if people like what they try then they can come back and do more.

“We ran the first of these taster days last year and the feedback was enormously positive. We have even more going on this time round.”

While the organisers hope people will spend the full day at the event, you can just turn up for the sessions that take your fancy.

Loose clothing is recommended for the dance sessions. You can take your own instruments for the music improvisation sessions, but some will be available to borrow.

The Something for Everyone taster day takes place at the UCLan Media Factory in Kirkham Street on Sunday 9 February from 10am to 5pm. For updates, join the Facebook event. For more information on the taster day, contact Jon on JAveyard@uclan.ac.uk.
