A BKD brownie: crunchy on the outside, gooey on the inside

A Fulwood couple who own BKD, an eco-friendly bakery business, are now branching into postal deliveries to cope with demand.

Carolina and Jamie started making brownies as treats for friends and family, which proved so popular that they turned their hobby into a business in July 2019.

They currently supply to several local coffee shops, and very kindly offered to drop some brownies off for Blog Preston on the way to deliver a batch to Brew and Bake, an independent coffee shop situated in the Market Hall.

Like a magical brownie fairy, Carolina brought over two boxes of home-made, freshly baked brownies to my house before speeding off to finish her deliveries.

There were six huge brownies with chunks of Kinder Bueno and six more packed with chocolate chips, and both types were amazing. Crispy on the outside and perfectly soft and squishy on the inside. Unfortunately, I hadn’t realised that they could be frozen for up to three months, so made the mistake of offering them to some family and friends.

They went down a storm. So much so that I had the rare honour of my daughter phoning me from her room upstairs to insist that I inform Blog Preston readers that they are the best brownies that have ever existed, and I have to get more. I agreed, as there are a vast array of flavours that Carolina rattled off. The ones that stuck in my mind were Black Forest, espresso and Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Carolina told Blog Preston: “We will try to make any flavours that customers request. Our minimum order is for twelve brownies, but as they can be frozen that doesn’t dissuade people from ordering them, and our eco-friendly postal bags have a second closing strip so they can be reused and resealed.

“We take the environment into account in every decision we make, so we don’t use disposable plastic equipment or any cleaning products that harm our seas. We were thrilled to recently be awarded a five star food hygiene rating, proving that eco-friendly doesn’t mean less effective.”

More information about Carolina and Jamie’s brownie business can be found on the BKD Facebook page.
