Vegan activists held a protest outside the Gafoor Slaughterhouse in Fletcher Road.
The vigil was held on Friday by Lancashire Animal Save in an appeal to rise awareness on animals in plight and help people become vegan.
45 activists attended the event including families and organisers Stef Smith and Cat Race said the event felt like a ‘real family affair’.
Stef Smith said: “We are all brought up in a society that is taught that some animals are for companionship and some for eating.
“If we change the scenario in today’s situation and imagine it was cats and dogs being taken in in these squalid conditions to their deaths it’s safe to assume there would be uproar.”
Gafoor Slaughterhouse is halal certified poultry slaughterhouse and is trying to expand to process 1 million birds per week.
Stef Smith, added: “The aim of our event was two fold.
“First we do these vigils at lots of slaughter houses to spend some time with the Animals in the trucks before they go in, to acknowledge their life and offer some comfort.
“Secondly, in this case, we want to object the expansion.
“Also, with all the environmental impacts connected with animal agriculture we shouldn’t be looking to expand, we should be looking for ways to reduce.”
