The next stage for the A582 road widening plans is underway.
The plans would see the A582 between Broad Oak roundabout and Stanifield Lane widened to create a dual carriageway from the motorway network to Preston city centre.
A proposed three-metre wide combined footway/cycle track would extend along the full length of the dualled sections of road, while a section of the B5253 Flensburg Way from the Tank roundabout to Longmeanygate would also be widened to dual carriageway as part of this scheme.
A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: “Lancashire County Council’s Cabinet have agreed to the preparation of a compulsory purchase order to acquire all the necessary land and rights for a dual-carriageway along the A582 South Ribble Western Distributor in South Ribble.
“At the meeting on Thursday 7 November, Cabinet approved the use of its powers of compulsory purchase, which enable the council to acquire the land needed for the road widening.”
Part of the A582 has already been widened to dual carriageway between the Guild Way flyover and Broad Oak roundabout at Penwortham towards Preston, as part of an earlier stage of work.
Many of the junctions along the A582 have also already been widened to add capacity in readiness for this widening work.
Proposals for the dual carriageway were first mooted in 2014 and a funding bid was tabled in August.
The widening of the South Ribble Western Distributor is one of the major road schemes as part of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal. These include James Towers Way in Broughton, as well as the Preston Western Distributor and John Horrocks Way in Penwortham, both of which are currently being built.
