National food and drink chains The Botanist and Mowgli are coming to St George’s Shopping Centre.

The two brands will open in autumn 2020 as part of St George’s plans to build a 28,000 sq ft restaurant quarter.

The Botanist has taken the development’s largest unit at 10,000 sq ft, on a 15-year lease. The brand, which describes itself as being “a world of adventure and exploration, where botanical cocktails await the curiously minded”, currently has 19 outlets across the country in places such as Birmingham, Alderley Edge and Bath.

Indian street food operator Mowgli has also signed up on a 15-year lease, in a 3,400 sq ft unit. Mowgli began in 2014 with one restaurant in Liverpool, and now has 10 venues nationally. The chain says it is “all about how Indians eat at home and on their streets.”

Blog Preston reported in May that Mowgli was eyeing up a restaurant in the city.

At the time, Mowgli founder and chief executive Nisha Katona said: “I’m thrilled to be opening Mowgli Preston in 2020; I was born and raised a Lancashire lass and am now honouring my Lancashire roots.

“I worked as a barrister in Preston and would have given my right arm for the lunchtime smash, grab and zing of Mowgli Indian home kitchen.

“So I’m building one and hope she brings you much joy. I have been hunting for a long time and I’m delighted to open Mowgli Preston, our soon to be home from home.”

The development, which faces on to Friargate, includes another three leisure units.

Preston City Centre BID Manager Mark Whittle said: “Both The Botanist and Mowgli are strong brands with a great heritage in some big cities.

“We are delighted that they have shown confidence by investing in Preston, and look forward to them joining our vibrant and award-winning leisure scene.”
