Preston cycling champion Hugh Carthy has taken his first world tour win in the Tour De Suisse 2019.

Carthy, 24, took a 96km solo breakaway to win the final stage nine of the tour on Sunday June 24.

He also took king of the mountains classification, as Egan Bernol secured the overall race victory.

He said: “Two days ago I just wanted to finish and be on holiday.”

The route was changed in recent days due to safety concerns and Carthy crossed the finish line alone, with Rohan Dennis one minute and two seconds behind him and Egan Bernal at his wheel.
