Train fans and onlookers gathered to see The Flying Scotsman during Saturday (20 July).
The engine is due back into Preston station three more times during the course of Saturday.
British Transport Police have officers on patrol to assist the expected crowds on the platforms.
A spokesman said: “Please stay the correct side of the lineside fences.
“And stay back from the platform edge.”
They have dedicated safety information for rail enthusiasts.
The Scotsman left Preston at 11.14am.
It’s heading out on the Blackburn line and then comes back to the city at 2.31pm.
The Scotsman is then replaced by diesels and the engine will wait at Preston before being hooked up again at 7.58pm on Saturday.
It heads up through Blackburn, Clitheroe, Carnforth and then back to Preston for 11.01pm.
