The first phase of the Bus Station’s public space is now open to the public.

The area on the western edge opened this week as part of Lancashire County Council’s plan to create a large new public area with new benches, grassed areas and trees, new lighting and signage.

Some work is still needed to complete this section including the seating and planting but visitors can now access the area at the coach station end.

The next stage of work will move towards the opposite end with the overall work expected to finish in December 2019. 

The aim is to increase the connection between the Grade II-Listed building and the city centre.

This is the final stage in the redevelopment of the building and the bus aprons by the county council, which owns the bus station. 

County Councillor Keith Iddon, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We’re creating a pleasant and welcoming new area on the former bus apron next to the station. The first phase is now open for people to enjoy. 

“When we get good weather, this will be a lovely spot to go to while you wait for your bus, to spend some time during a lunch break or to meet up with people. 

“We’re now moving on to the next phase of the work, which should be completed towards the end of this year.” 

The new space has been carefully designed to keep and improve the views of this well-known building, while adding this space which could be used for different activities and events. 

This work is part of the City Deal, an agreement between Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council, along with central government and Homes England. 

Preston City Councillor Peter Moss, Cabinet member for planning and regulation, said: “We are pleased to see this project moving forward as another step in the extensive regeneration of the city centre. Working with Lancashire County Council and the City Deal team, this scheme enhances the look and feel of a very busy, public space for everyone to enjoy.”
