New map shows planned new route for traffic through Penwortham

Plans to cut traffic through Penwortham could see the slip road onto the flyover closed.

Lancashire County Council aims to discourage people from making unnecessary journeys through the centre of Penwortham once the new bypass is opened.

The slip road currently takes vehicles on the A59 Liverpool Road coming from the centre of Penwortham, onto the Guild Way flyover and across the river towards Preston.

The council has released a new map to show drivers the proposed route.

The changes would not take place until the bypass is opened.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Once the new bypass opens, we’ll be able to make changes to the road layout around Penwortham to encourage people to use the new bypass, rather than travelling unnecessarily through the town if they don’t need to.

“By reducing the amount of traffic through the town, it will reduce queuing and related pollution, while making it a nicer place for people who live here. This should also help businesses in the area by making it a better place to be.”

Fewer vehicles are expected to travel through the town once the new Penwortham Bypass opens, as it will give a quicker route to Preston for through traffic from the western side of the town.

Access would still be possible to the flyover via the roundabouts at the junctions of Leyland Road and Golden Way.

People will still be able to head to Preston along Liverpool Road and across Penwortham Bridge. Access from Golden Way onto the flyover will be unaffected.

Public notices have been placed in the local area, and information is being sent to local properties to let people know about the proposals.
