Climate change protest group Extinction Rebellion has marched through Preston.

Dozens of activists massed at Preston Railway Station before making their way towards County Hall during Saturday (20 July).

They have then marched up Fishergate and are planning to hold non-violent direct action and a picnic somewhere in Preston city centre.

The protest is expected to last until 2pm.

Extinction Rebellion are calling for climate change to be declared an emergency and politicians to do more.

It has three demands which are:

  • The government to declare a ‘climate and ecological emergency’
  • The UK to stop loss of habitat and reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025
  • A Citizens’ Assembly should be created to look at how to solve climate change with advice from experts

Protests by Extinction Rebellion in London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Leeds have seen major traffic disruption and arrests made by police.

At this stage the Extinction Rebellion protest in Preston does not look to have caused any travel disruption and there have been no arrests.
