A crash closed a major road in Penwortham.

Pope Lane was shut between the Co-Op and Cop Lane after a crash involving two cars around 8.15pm on Sunday (26 May).

South Ribble Police advised motorists to avoid the area. They closed Cop Lane, Woodville Road and Bishopsway.

A Mini and a Polo collided outside the Black Bull pub in Pope Lane shortly after 8.15pm, according to Inspector Steve Bradshaw of South Ribble Police.

Two people have been taken to hospital, one from each car. They are said to have minor injuries.

A man has been detained at the scene after a foot chase.

Michael Treadwell, who lives nearby, was one of two people who gave chase when one of the drivers in the crash ran off from the scene.

He said: “The driver absconded and ran off infront of my house.

“I chased him with another bloke and we detained him until the police arrived.”

Police confirmed a man had been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The road reopened around 11pm.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting log 1447.
