Drivers are being advised to move their cars to parking bays after filling up at Morrisons petrol station on the Docks.

While there are no official notices or directions, the advice is being given out informally by till staff at the newly re-opened petrol station.

After hearing about this I put on my investigative journalist hat and ventured down on Sunday evening to check it out.

True to form cars were queueing off the forecourt and I was the last car to be able to fit on, with the van behind me remaining on Mariners Way.

While waiting I witnessed two instances of pump rage – one of which was directed at me by a panicked driver who thought I was about to unfairly cut in front of them. (I tried to reassure them while in the queue at the till that I wouldn’t have done that, and promptly got my head bitten off; I guess this sort of flak is all part of being a hard-hitting news reporter though.)

Anyway I was able to get to the pump within about five minutes partly thanks to the guy in front, who moved to a parking bay before going in to pay. I was able to start filling up straightaway, and once done I followed suit by parking in one of the ten spaces in front of the Morrisons Daily store.

I asked the person serving me if the advice I’d heard was correct. They said: “In theory that’s the idea but we can’t force people to do it. It’d be a lot easier though wouldn’t it, because then it would all flow through.”

It certainly did the trick for me and all in all it wasn’t too painful an experience.

However it seems there’s a lot of pump rage swirling around the petrol station, with a post about it in the Ashton and Riversway PACT Facebook group garnering 149 comments from angry and bemused drivers.

One described the newly revamped station as a “sh*t set up” while others began debating whether a) you’re allowed to move your car before paying, b) if the next person can fill up before you’ve paid and c) if it is in fact possible to move your car and still pay for the correct fuel.

I can now confirm that a) yes you are allowed, b) yes they can fill up before you’ve paid and c) unconfirmed… I didn’t check the amount as I was too busy being investigative. Will check my receipt later.

Do you use the Morrisons petrol station at the Docks? What do you think of the new system? Let us know in the comments below.
