The M55 was closed for five hours last night after 24 vehicles collided in the carriageway.

A sudden snowstorm led to treacherous driving conditions with several motorists losing control of their vehicles.

Lancashire Road Police Tweeted: “Thankfully no serious injuries but it was carnage.”

The motorway was reopened at around 3am.
