Motorway closed for five hours after 24 vehicle pile up

The M55 was closed for five hours last night after 24 vehicles collided in the carriageway.

A sudden snowstorm led to treacherous driving conditions with several motorists losing control of their vehicles.

Gritters set out across the county to make the roads safer, and diversions were put in place between junctions 1 and 3 of the M55.

Lancashire Road Police Tweeted: “Thankfully no serious injuries but it was carnage.”

The motorway was reopened at around 3am.
