Holidaymakers are hitting the M6 during Good Friday and police say it’s the busiest they’ve seen it.
Assistant Chief Constable Terry Woods of Lancashire Police took to Twitter to say there were ‘massive queues’.
He said: “Not seen traffic congestion so early on Bank Holiday for a long time on M6 and M61. Massive queues already from near Wigan towards Lancaster and back to Chorley on M61. Will only get worse.”
A crash near Junction 31 for Samlesbury/Tickled Trout had caused delays of more than an hour. The vehicles involved have now been cleared from the motorway by emergency services.
Traffic England is reporting delays of an hour from Junction 27 northbound and on the M61 northbound delays of more than 30 minutes from Junction 6 northbound to where it meets the M6.
Delays have continued throughout Good Friday and show no sign of slowing into the late afternoon.
