The M61 was shut for four hours near Preston after a two-car crash.

Police shut the motorway just south of Junction 9 for Clayton Brook due to the collision.

One person was taken to hospital by the North West Air Ambulance and has ‘serious injuries’ according to South Ribble Police. Police have now said the 38-year-old man remains in a ‘serious condition’.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service sent two crews from Preston and Bamber Bridge to assist at the scene.

A spokeswoman confirmed firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to free the casualty from the car which had ‘left the motorway’.

Three other people were treated for minor injuries.
