Parts of Broughton and Fulwood were woken by small explosions during Thursday night.
The fire, which was on land off Sandy Gate Lane behind Broughton High School, involved a JCB.
An investigation is underway by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service into the cause of the fire.
A large bonfire had been set around 700m from the road and this is understood to have spread to the JCB.
