A new cake shop is bringing weekend treats to the people of Lane Ends.
Sugar Wishes, which opened on Saturday 2 March, will be selling cupcakes, cake jars, brownies and other sweet treats every Friday and Saturday.
The shop is owned by Kelly Kirkby, who has run a bespoke cake service since 2013. She started making cakes when her nearly 9-year-old daughter was born.
Kelly said: “I didn’t want to pay someone else to make my daughter’s cakes for the next 20 years! But I’d never made cakes from scratch before, so I did a six-week course at Preston’s College. I started doing cakes for friends and family, and then did my first wedding cake in 2013.

“It just snowballed from there, but I still worked full-time in marketing until 10 months ago. That’s when I decided to go for it and do cakes full-time from home.
“I got really busy last year and just didn’t have room at home, so I thought I’d get a shop for a bigger space to work.
“I’ve since realised there’s a massive demand for cakes in Preston, so I decided to serve weekend sweet treats. I’ve kept it to two days for now but if it’s a hit I’ll look at increasing opening hours.”
This year Kelly has taken orders for nearly double the number of wedding cakes she made last year. She is also almost fully booked for celebration cake orders until August. And with people queueing out of the shop door on launch day, it’s good to hear that Kelly works well under pressure.
She said: “I love my job – I thrive under stress, and I enjoy seeing the finished article. But the best part is hearing customer feedback, especially from the children. When you talk to them about their cakes, their faces light up.”
