Updated plans have been submitted for a retirement complex at Broughton crossroads.

The former Taste of Spice restaurant will be demolished to make way for a complex of 22 one and two bedroom flats on the site.

Following a number of consultations with Broughton Parish Council, Historic England, United Utilities and other agencies, developers Midas Land Ltd have submitted new images and floor plans for the three storey development to Preston City Council.

The plans also include retail and office units on the site.

Parish councillor Pat Hastings welcomed the provision of retirement accommodation, but said she was concerned the development may not be in keeping with its surroundings.

She said: “Our Neighbourhood Plan highlighted the need for apartments/smaller properties (older persons accommodation) for “downsizers”.

“In principle it is positive with the new shops and offices creating business opportunities, but size and design of the structures are not in keeping with the Village and surrounding buildings as it is taller than the tower on the building opposite and has a flat roof.

“Broughton has a Local Heritage list  agreed by PCC whcih seeks to maintain and enhance the Village centre and vista. The Touch of Spice is integral to the vista as it is one of the two former coaching inns on the toll road from Preston to Lancaster.”

The new plans feature a change in layout for the residential properties.

The complex is proposed to occupy the corner of Garstang Road and Woodplumpton Lane if planners give the scheme the green light.

The shops and offices will be at the Garstang Road side of the site, with residential property behind, bordering Downing Court.

It will mean demolition of the 93-year-old pub – known for generations as The Golden Ball – to make way for the scheme.
