Gritting crews out as temperatures plummet in Preston

Temperatures are plummeting rapidly in Preston and Lancashire as minus overnight figures are forecast for the next few nights.

Lancashire County Council has commenced gritting operations for the first time this Autumn and Winter.

All priority routes across central and south Lancashire are being gritted with temperatures to fall as low as zero degrees.

You can see exactly which routes will be gritted on the county council website.

Here’s your hour-by-hour forecast for Preston over the weekend and the Monday morning commute:

Saturday (27 October)

6pm – Five degrees and still clear

7pm – Staying at five

8pm – Dropping to four degrees

9pm – Three degrees, need a coat if you’re out on the town

10pm – Three degrees

11pm – Holding at three degrees, and still a moderate breeze making it feel colder

Sunday (28 October)

12midnight – Two degrees, brrrr!

1am – Randomly lifts a degree to three, and remember the clocks go back now, so it’s actually 12midnight again!

2am through to 5am – Remains at two degrees

6am – A clear morning, but a freezing one

7am – Up to three degrees and sunrise at 7.20am

8am – If you’re out for an early bike ride or run then be sure to wrap up warm or pedal faster, it’s still thre degrees

9am – The sun breaks through and raises temperatures to five degrees

10am – Six degrees, time for a brew!

11am – A positively balmy seven degrees, there’s a gentle breeze just to make it feel even cooler

12noon – Eight degrees, still sunny

1pm – Highs of nine degrees!

2pm – Still nine degrees

3pm – Falling to eight

4pm – A clear and sunny afternoon, but it’s seven degrees

5pm – Six degrees, sun has set at 4.46pm

6pm – Five degrees, and it’ll feel a lot later than it is, remember the clocks have changed

7pm – Four degrees and a cold, cold, night ahead

8pm – Three degrees

9pm – Staying at two degrees

10pm – Still two degrees

11pm – Put an extra cover on the bed, snuggle up close, it’s one degrees out there

Monday (29 October)

12midnight to 6am – It will barely be above freezing all night long

7am – One degree

8am – Dawning bright and the sun will break through at 7.04am, but it’s chuffing freezing

9am – Lifting to four degrees

10am – Still just five degrees

Lunchtime and afternoon – Highs of eight degrees, still pleasant sunshine

Evening – Another cold one, falling to four degrees
