Preston’s Cenotaph will be decorated with poppies to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Preston City Council is working with local craft group, The Knit Wits, to decorate the Cenotaph over the period of Remembrance.

In 2014 the group began decorating the staircase within the Harris as part of the Preston Remembers project, with similar crocheted poppies.

It is hoped that the decorations around the Cenotaph will provide a link between the monument and the Roll of Honour in the museum.

Members of the public, schools and community groups are also invited to get involved and crochet their own poppies to be added to the display.

Mayor of Preston, Councillor Trevor Hart, said: “The staircase in the Harris covered in poppies looks fantastic and is a constant reminder of the sacrifice given by thousands of men and women.

“I’d love schools and community groups to really get on board with this idea and crochet their own poppies. They will be on display on the Cenotaph railings in time for this year’s Remembrance Sunday ceremony.”

The poppies can be created and dropped off at the Town Hall on Lancaster Road or posted.
