A sea of pink took over St Catherine’s Park as more than 1,200 walkers came together to remember their loved ones.

Men, women, families and colleagues took part in the 2018 Moonlight and Memories Walk in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Walking under the stars, the 10 or four mile walk helped to raise £89,600 in sponsorship.

Proceeds will help fund the charity’s specialised care across the communities of Central Lancashire.

St Catherine’s helps local people affected by conditions like cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure to have quality of life until the end of life.

Among those taking part were cousins Joy Ford and Cindy Billington.

Joy had travelled more than 230 miles from Norfolk to take part in memory of her auntie – Cindy’s mum – Christine Ralph, who was cared for at St Catherine’s in April.

Cindy, from Lostock Hall, said: “We could not have wanted better for her – they took such good care of her, it’s hard to put into words the difference it made.

“It’s a very emotional night, but I know Mum would be proud.”

Joy Ford said: “When Cindy told me about the walk I had to be here – every hour of the five hour journey was worth it!”

Miss Natural England finalist Becky Yates also took part, and said: “This is my first Moonlight and Memories Walk and it’s fantastic – there’s a brilliant atmosphere and it’s so important to raise money for this amazing place.”

The event was also an occasion for several celebrations including Faye Reeve-Halton who became a teenager at midnight, and Jack Moody who brought along a group of friends to mark his 10th birthday.

Faye Reeve-Halton said: “My mum has been doing it for a few years and I’ve always wanted to join in as it looked really exciting!

“It seemed like the perfect way to celebrate my birthday whilst raising money for St Catherine’s in memory of my gran and granddad.”

Director of Community and Income Lorraine Charlesworth said: “The Moonlight and Memories Walk is a really special event for St Catherine’s – not only is it our biggest sponsored fundraiser, it’s an opportunity for our supporters to do something positive in memory of their loved ones.

“Once again there was an incredible atmosphere in the park before the walk set off as people gathered together – many sporting some fabulous fancy dress outfits and accessories.

“Our Memory Wall was full of heartfelt messages, and the group warm-up was lots of fun as people danced and sang along.

“A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part or who sponsored our walkers so generously. Events like this cannot happen without a team of dedicated of volunteers so we’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone who gave their time to make it such a successful night for everyone.”
