The twice-former leader of Preston City Council has been laid to rest after a service at Preston Minster.
Attended by dignitaries and political leaders of all colours across the city the sun shone down as Alderman Peter Rankin’s life was remembered and celebrated.
Hundreds of people packed into the Minster and lined the streets around the Town Hall as Alderman Rankin’s funeral procession made its way through the streets.
Alderman Rankin passed away, aged 67, in early June following a six-month battle with brain cancer.
The service began with a welcome and introduction from The Venerable Michael Everitt.
A tribute from former councillor Rankin’s family followed and then a hymn, The Lord’s My Shepherd.
Readings were made by former city council chief executive Lorraine Norris and Brian McConnell.
Bishop David Chillingworth gave the eulogy, and this was followed by Norah King singing O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schibbhi by Puccini.
Former Mayor of Preston councillor Brian Rollo also gave a tribute before the One Voice Community Choir brought tears with their rendition of Bill Withers’ Lean on Me.
The funeral service ended with Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac.
Any donations in memory of Peter, which will go to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation and Marie Curie, can be made through Martin’s Funeral Directors, 186-188 Tulketh Brow, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston, PR2 2JJ or 01772733007.
