As part of the Ramadan celebrations being held across Preston throughout May and June, Islamic women’s support group, Sisters4Sisters, are holding an ‘Experiencing Ramadan’ evening on Friday (1 June).
The event, in its fifth year now, invites people of all faiths (or none) to experience the element of fasting, while helping to raise money for a local charity.
Sisters4Sisters are encouraging those who are interested to complete a sponsored fast during the day, and then come together in the evening to reflect on their experience.
Participants will be able to enjoy some entertainment, and once the sun has set they will break the fast with some delicious food.
The theme for this year’s Experiencing Ramadan is, ‘Celebrating the Power of Women.’

The event will begin with an official opening by the Mayor of Preston, followed by talks from keynote speakers such as Ustadha Ameena Blake, Zoe Bennett, and MP Naz Shah.
During the holy month of Ramadan, which this year falls between Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 14th June, Muslims do not eat or drink while the sun is up, breaking their fast only after sunset.
They also offer prayers, give generously to charity, and regularly study the Qu’ran.
‘Experiencing Ramadan’ will take place on Friday 1st June from 6:30pm – 11pm at the Royal Banqueting Hall on London Road.

For those who do not wish to take part in the sponsored fast, they are asked to make a minimum donation of £5 on the night.
All proceeds from sponsors and donations will this year go to Safenet – Preston Women’s Refuge.
