Police closed the M61 heading towards Preston during Monday evening’s rush hour.
Long delays stretched back from Junction 6 at Horwich due to a car fire.
The fire, between Rivington Services and Chorley (Junction 8), was captured on camera by one passing passenger.
Around four fire engines were in attendance to put out the blaze around 6pm on Monday (21 May).
The carriageway was fully reopened around 9pm.
It caused long delays on the M61 northbound and also on the surrounding routes such as the A6.
