A man was arrested in the city centre today (September 9).
Word from our reporter at the scene indicated that one male was seen running down Market Street away from several police officers.
The male entered an abandoned unit with officers entering the building after him.
Police eventually located the man in the former Post Office building in Market Street. He was found hiding within the building.
Several officers entered the building with batons drawn and emerged with the man restrained at around 11.51am.
Preston Police have now confirmed that the man had stolen a diamond ring from McGowens Jewellers at around 9.50am before hiding.

A statement from Preston Police said: “PC 4242 Banister, PC 5415 Underwood and Special Constable 9906 Miller searched the building and located the male hiding.
“After a struggle with Police Officers the offender was arrested and the diamond ring was recovered.
“Preston Police would like to thank the vigilant member of public that assisted the police officers in helping locate the male and resulted in the diamond ring being returned to its owner.”
