Motorists left frustrated by lengthy delays on Lightfoot Lane can breathe a sigh of relief from Friday (28 July).
Developers Persimmon Homes are having the road – which is one of the main cross-city routes – widened near the Preston Grasshoppers rugby club.
The section of road in Fulwood has temporary traffic lights in place while the roadworks take place.
Lancashire County Council say the work is needed to allow a new right-hand turn into Lightfoot Green Lane for the new housing development.
That section of Lightfoot Lane had also been resurfaced and the footpath widened at the same time.

However, drivers using the road are being warned of an imminent set of roadworks just yards down the road.
Due to begin in mid-August the work is being undertaken to create a new side-road off Lightfoot Lane to access land earmarked for building on by Barratt Homes.
A spokesman for the county council said: “The work is to create an entrance to the site, make a connection to the sewer main, and put four-way lights on that junction.
“The little slip road between Lightfoot Lane and Eastway will need to be closed at times but only when necessary, so people who live off that part of Lightfoot Lane will have to access Lightfoot Lane from the A6 when the closure is in place.
“The aspect of the work that will affect most people will be two-way traffic lights on Lightfoot Lane similar to the arrangement currently in place.”
