Households across Preston were startled by a series of loud explosions on Saturday evening.

From Lea to Longridge reports came in of extremely loud banging noises from around 10.30pm.

Gregory tweeted: “Was very loud from Longsands area. Heard several loud bangs over the sound of the TV.”

Ken tweeted: “Heard in Hutton too. Long prolonged rumbles. Was out on foot and definitely no lightning anywhere around.”

Others speculated it was a plane breaking the sound barrier or a major fireworks display out towards the Fylde. It is understood there was a large private fireworks display at a private party at The Villa at Wrea Green/Ribby Hall around 10.30pm on Saturday evening.

Electric Avenue tweeted: “It made my windows rattle and woke up the kids.”

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were not called to any incidents on Saturday night which could trigger such a loud explosion.

He said: “The sound of fireworks can carry, so it’s most likely a large display somewhere.”
