Passengers using Preston Station in the early hours of Saturday morning were evacuated due to a gas leak.

Network Rail and National Grid staff arrived to assist Virgin Trains in securing the station.

Callum Taylor, an acting graduate from UCLan, was on a train heading for Preston from Liverpool.

He said: “Emergency lights have gone off now too in total darkness. We’ve been given glow sticks!”

Overhead wires had to be turned off during the gas leak in case of any risk of sparks.
