Disruption to trains through Preston after woman killed by train

Trains through to Preston faced heavy disruption this evening after a woman was killed at Wigan North Western railway station.

Police confirmed that the woman was hit between Wigan North Western and Warrington Bank Quay resulting in all lines being blocked.

A number of services were delayed for approximately an hour while others were cancelled.

Olympic athlete Jenny Meadows was at the station and tweeted regarding the incident.

She said: “Feeling heartbroken that a young girl has just taken her life in front of me at Wigan train station. If in need please speak out.”

A Northern Rail statement said: “There is currently no estimate as to when the line will reopen. However, trains are expected to be disrupted until approximately 5:30pm.”
