Peter Charles who was first on the scene said the motorcyclist, a young man, died in his arms.

A number of drivers stopped and Mr Charles phoned 999 while other passers-by, including an off-duty detective, gave the man CPR. But they could not save him and he is understood to have died at the scene.

Mr Charles, from Clayton-le-Woods, said: “Having to push a car off someone and seeing them take their last breath is the most upsetting thing I’ve ever seen.

“Thoughts go out to his family and friends.”
