Area Manager Simon Fryer for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Due to the nature of the fluid in the building it is a large fire.
“We’re positioning our aerial ladder platforms to ensure we can tackle the fire.
“We’ll be here for most of the day. We need people to avoid the area.
“The plume of smoke will die down during the day.”
Two aerial ladders are also in use to send water down from above.
At 7.54am the fire service said they had reduced the number of fire engines at the scene to six. However they would remain on the scene throughout Wednesday damping down.
South Ribble Police said roads in the area were very busy during the morning rush hour due to the road closures.
