It was heading eastbound, in the third lane, when it crashed off the motorway, moving down an embankment and ending up on its roof in a field.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service rushed three crews to the scene and they cut the driver, a 30-year-old man from Blackpool, free from the wreckage. He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The motorway was shut for four hours between Junction 3 (Kirkham) and Junction 1 (Preston) on Christmas Eve.

Sgt Malcolm Bell, of Lancashire Police, said: “This was a serious road traffic collision which left a man with severe injuries.

“We would ask anyone with information to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log reference 0805 of December 24.
