The winner has been picked for the Preston Bus Station design but who else applied?
AdvertisementAll of the unsuccessful entries have now been revealed by the Royal Institute of British Architects who ran the competition on behalf of Lancashire County Council.
New York architect John Puttick scooped the contract with his design, but there were entries from elsewhere across the globe.
We’ve taken a spin through them to see just how the Preston Youth Zone and the Bus Station apron could have been designed.
Some are better than others, and we’ve been a little tongue in check but here goes as we plough through the tens of entries submitted…
A bizarre athletics track…
Not like any greenhouse we’ve ever seen…
Carved in stone…
We assume that is a climbing wall on the outside…
The big blue…
A rooftop allotment, how errr- city living?
Meanwhile in the late 1970s…
Someone got a bit carried away in Clip Art…
Is that guy in the bottom right carving a water melon? No one eats water melons in the city centre…
We actually quite like this one, very classy…
Starship Enterprise, the Bus Station edition…
Someone entered this competition instead of Bake Off…
Tracey Island…
This one is just a bit full, put some effort in lads…
That looks like a giant slide on the left…
Luxury yachts have NO place in the centre of Preston…
Layer cake…
Very Spinningfields…
Straight outta Eastern Europe…
The Meccano edition…
All the young people need is an outdoor skate park…
That grass needs cutting…
Because that grass won’t get soaked through for most of the year…
Cultural Bowl, try swimming pool for most of the year…
Wow, costa del Preston…
Leaving aside the ghosts, this one had us nodding off…
Pretty cool and very sensible…
Children employed to mow the grass…
That’s just a big shed…
Where you going tonight? PRYZ? Is that a new nightclub? No, it’s the Youth Zone…
Well, urine is a colour well associated with the Bus Station…
The great Pyramid of Preston…
What’s through the yellow door? We’ll never find out…
Like one of those houses which gets a little carried away with the Christmas lights…
Too red, far too red…
Preston Bus Station, the 1980s arcade game edition…
Definitely assembled via IKEA instructions…
It’s the water melon man again…
Zzzzzzzzzzzz….
We quite like this one…
And it was all yellow…
Someone’s GCSE art coursework was accidentally submitted…
The rusty entry…
Are those the Playdays buses on the left hand side?
There’s definitely a T-Rex in the middle of this if you look closely…
Complete with the world’s largest skateboarder…
Could we see the outside of the building too please?
The balloon seller usually on the Flag Market has an absolute nightmare…
A Chelsea top! No wonder this one didn’t make it through…
In the school canteen…
Bored once more…
Put some effort in please…
For some reason this has the feeling of the Northern Lights…
It is never this sunny in Preston, and this is just a giant poster. Is there anything behind it?
There are no words…
Who is Yvonne!?
The collapsing building effect, ah yes…
The left hand side reminds us of those race tracks we had as a kid…
What are you both looking at?!
Can’t see the Bus Station for the trees…
Jeez, that’s bright!
We see your bright yellow and raise you…
All the young people in Preston must fit in a tiny box…
Quite cool, but going to cost a bomb to light it…
Yes, that is a plane…
Like your school hall has been put outside…
The urban forest…
Rave! Rave! Rave!
Rave again!
Lovely contours…
Drawing inspiration from games consoles everywhere…
Is that a giant cross?
The Bus Station does not look like a giant coffee table…
Back of a fag packet design…
Recreating Avenham Park in the centre of Preston…
A touch of the Pompidou centre…
Only Smarties have the answer…
These are the same people who do the UCLan designs aren’t they? With their weird people…
If it’s not got a skate ramp, it’s not being allowed…
We don’t do colour here…
No, we’re not entirely sure either…
For some reason there’s a slush puppie on the front of this…
Back to the boring ones…
Random Roman-style pillar in the foreground…
