Shortly after 8am on Tuesday police were called to the Morrisons in Blackpool Road.
The security guard was approached by one man who stole the cash and then drove off in the car with two other man – one of whom is believed to have been holding a black handgun.
Police found a silver Renault Captur, believed to have been driven by the offenders, abandoned in Ash Grove near Ribbleton Park.
A substantial amount of cash was taken by the three men.
The man who approached the security guard is described as white, around 5’8″, stocky, wearing black trousers and a black hooded jacket, hood u and face covered so only his eyes were visible.
A second man, who was the driver of the car, was described as white, in his mid 30s, skinny, with short dark hair and facial stubble. He was wearing round glasses and appeared to be quite tall. He had a jacket with a blue stripe across the chest.
There is no description of the third man in the car.
Detective Inspector Jon Clegg, of Preston CID, said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed what happened to come forward and contact the police.
“We have found what we believe to be a getaway vehicle abandoned and I need to establish how the offenders have then left the area. I would appeal to people in the area to report any suspicious activity to the police as soon as possible.
“Fortunately, the security guard wasn’t hurt during the incident but they have been left shaken in what must have been a frightening ordeal.”
