The Gentry awaiting their train at Preston
They are The Gentry and this year’s special day for Preston North End supporters is coming up.
PNE travel to Oakwell the home of Barnsley FC on Saturday to see if North End can keep their automatic promotion push on track.
And the Gentry will be donning their bowler hats to cheer on Simon Grayson’s men.
Preston Supporters Group have arranged the now annual event for an away game each season since 2008.
It was restarted in 2005 in memory of John Tracey a member of the original PNE gentry who passed away that year.
The Gentry tradition dates from the early 1970s when Alan Ball senior described “Preston fans are the best, they’re the gentry”. This inspired a number of PNE fans to don bowler hats and pin strip suits for the next game at Deepdale.
John Kelly from the Supporters Group said: “Preston Supporters Group with the support of PNEONLINE will be pulling out all the stops to make this another great day in the PNE fans’ calendar.
“We are determined to make this the best ‘Gentry Day’ yet and will work together with other groups to ensure it is.
“However it will not be a success without your support, so please get out your bowlers, pinstripes, bow ties and lets once again show town once again that “The Gentry” are a cut above everyone else.”
